In our first post we listed the top 10 things to do in Kenya. Here are some more ‘must do’ activities:

1. Balloon Safaris: Hot-air balloon flights depart daily from both Keekorok Lodge and Fig Tree Lodge in Masai Mara national Reserve and include a champagne breakfast on the plains. Not to be missed, a silent dawn glide is an absolutely superb way of viewing the savannah plains and the animals, without the intrusion of vehicles and dozens of other tourists.

2. Camel Safaris: Most of them take place in the Samburu and Turkana tribal areas between Isiolo and Lake Turkana. A superb way of getting off the beaten track and into areas where vehicle safari’s don’t go. An unrivalled desert experience among the nomads of Kenya’s north.

3. Game Reserves: The highlight is no doubt the annual wildebeest migration when literally millions of these ungainly beasts move north from the Serengeti in July and August in search of lush grass, before turning south again around October. Virtually everyone who visits Kenya goes to this 320 sq km of open grassland dotted with flat-topped Acacia trees. This is the Kenyan section of the Serengeti Plains and wildlife abounds.

4. Amboseli National Park: The best reasons for visiting this park are its dramatic setting against the backdrop of Mt Kilimanjaro, and the, chance of spotting a black rhino. Although there’s not the huge profusion of game found in the Masai Mara, the game here is easy to spot. There are also huge herds of elephants.

5. Kakamega Forest Reserve: A superb-slab of virgin tropical rainforest in the heart of an intensively cultivated agricultural area. Home of a number of primates and over ;330 species of birds. The forest itself comprises a number of habitats but is generally very dense. This reserve is well worth the minimal effort required to get to it.

6. Bird Watching in Lake Baringo: Of Kenya’s 1200 different species of birds, more than 450 species have been sighted at this freshwater lake. The lake has many islands (two of them inhabited). A spectacular sight and a very mellow place to visit. One of the islands is called ‘Devil’s Island’ and locals claim it is Haunted.
